Equipping for Godliness

Other New Year’s Resolutions to Consider

Thursday, December 31, 2020

by Scott F. Thomas

“For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.” 1 Timothy 4:8

New Years Resolutions are a tradition many Americans practice. We do this to make changes and accomplish goals. There are areas where we are lacking and wish to improve. So at the beginning of each year we set New Year’s Resolutions.

The goals we set cover a wide variety of areas. There are career goals, self improvement goals, attitude goals, and health goals. The resolutions are disciplines we implement daily or weekly to help us. They involve eating better, exercising more, reading books that have a positive influence, or deciding to go back to school. I like New Years Resolutions because they are a good way to discipline ourselves to improve our lives.

As we set these resolutions I encourage each of us to consider setting some Spiritual New Year’s Resolutions also. The purpose of Spiritual Resolutions are to improve your Spiritual Life. Your goal may be to draw nearer to God, be more committed in service, or become more giving and benevolent to others. We can discipline ourselves by establishing a daily discipline of reading God’s Word, joining a ministry at church, or developing a routing where you can serve or give to others. 2 Timothy 4:8 tells us, “For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.” Becoming healthier and changing my attitude are great goals to accomplish. But Spiritual growth leads to a peaceful, fruitful, godly life, that is not only good for every situation on earth but also has eternal value.

As the new year approaches, remember to make some Spiritual New Year’s Resolutions. Encourage other brothers and sisters in Christ to do the same. Begin this year on a strong spiritual foundation.

Grace & Peace,

Pastor Thomas
